Why Locals Love New Yamanishi
Nestled in the vibrant heart of Crows Nest, New Yamanishi offers an authentic Japanese dining experience that brings the true essence of Asian fusion and traditional ramen right to your table. This cozy gem on Falcon Street effortlessly blends the comforting warmth of an izakaya with inventive culinary artistry, crafting dishes that are as visually stunning as they are flavorful.
From the moment you step inside, the inviting atmosphere envelops you—evoking the bustling yet intimate feel of a local Tokyo eatery. The friendly staff and passionate owners offer a hospitality experience that feels deeply personal, making every visit special and memorable. As Hiro Koretsune aptly puts it, "The warmth from the owners is something truly special," and it’s precisely this heartfelt service that turns first-timers into loyal regulars.
The menu at New Yamanishi is an ode to Japanese flavors with a contemporary twist. Standout dishes include the rich and tender Miniwagyu Oxtail Ramen and the intriguingly flavored Prawn & Squid Ink Ramen noodles, both offering bold, umami-laden broths and perfectly cooked noodles that invite you to savor every slurp. For those seeking lighter plates, the Kingfish Sashimi and Salmon Sashimi deliver fresh, delicate textures that melt effortlessly on the palate.
Complementing these savory delights, the Aburi Wagyu Beef Roll stands out with its smoky, melt-in-your-mouth richness—a true testament to the kitchen's mastery of balancing traditional techniques with modern flavors. Beyond the main dishes, small plates like Edamame, Renkon Chips, and the uniquely satisfying Unagi Onigirl offer perfect accompaniments or sharing options, each prepared with meticulous attention to detail.
The drinks menu cleverly pairs Japanese beverages and international selections to elevate your dining experience. Take, for example, the elegant Junmai Dessert Wine from Gunma or the refreshing sparkle of the Nv Leo Vanin Treviso Prosecco, which bring a refined touch to your meal. For a sweeter finish, the Choya Baby Umeshu captures the essence of ripe ume fruit, a delightful sip to toast any occasion.
Guests rave not only about the food but also the seamless blend of service and ambiance. One celebratory review from JoKes Galore highlights an unforgettable night with “fantastic service” and “amazing food,” making New Yamanishi a perfect spot for special evenings or casual get-togethers alike. Whether you’re escaping the weekday rush or marking a milestone, the restaurant’s genuine warmth and consistently inventive menu beckon repeat visits.
In essence, New Yamanishi is more than just a place to eat; it’s a heartfelt journey to Japan’s culinary soul within Sydney’s lively Crows Nest. The quality, creativity, and character shine through every dish and interaction, promising an experience that’s as comforting as it is exciting.

The owners, staff, atmosphere, and food and drinks always make me feel like I’m back in Japan. The warmth from the owners is something truly special. A true hole-in-the-wall and a hidden gem in Crows Nest.

We had a great time, rocked up without a booking looking for a great time and the service was fantastic. We got the omakase set and a couple of bottled of sake. Fantastic. We got so drunk but the service was amazing. It was the dinner before my wedding and the service and food was amazing. We're going back same time next week!

We recently dined at this cozy Japanese restaurant on a rainy evening and were warmly welcomed despite arriving late. The staff kindly held our table, which was a great start to the evening. The four of us opted for the set menu as it seemed reasonably priced and included all the signature dishes we wanted to try. Each dish was delightful, with the standout flavors showcasing the restaurant’s expertise. My only suggestion would be to slightly reduce the amount of rice served with the eel for better balance. As the evening went on and the restaurant got busier, the second half of our meal took a bit longer to arrive, which was a little puzzling since we were one of the first tables to be served. Overall, it was an enjoyable dining experience. I didn’t manage to capture photos of all the dishes—some were too tempting, and we dove in before I remembered to snap a picture!

Excellent food, lovely people. Prawn & Squid Ink Ramen noodles and Oxtail Ramen were really tasty and very different to the same old, same old. At under $30 beats paying $35-45 for a bowl of pasta. Had Sangria and Ice-creams too, perfect for a warm day. Was very quiet at lunch, but last we went it was a queue out the door.

Like having your own local Japanese izakaya. The chef and staff are welcoming and friendly, remembering my regular orders better than I do! There are always inventive specials, such as the ramen bisque with prawn tempura, alongside the fan favourites, such as the wagyu oxtail ramen and spicy tuna tacos.

Crows Nest has a great selection of Japanese restaurants, New Yamanishi is a stand out. As soon as you enter you are transported to Japan, decor, Japanese contemporary music and the warm welcome are early indicators of a great evening! We enjoyed several dishes, spicy tuna taco (yes, Japanese taco!) delicious and delicate, tempura prawns on rice, again, great flavour and delicious, pickled vegetables, edamame as a starter, all exceptional. The yakitori chicken skewers were sensational, polite mouthfuls of deeply flavoured chicken…….try the Japanese fruit flavoured drinks, yuzu was a stand out (alcohol) and was a nice balance with the dishes. Great selection of beers and sake as well. Staff are polite , professional and can advise on food and drink options. Set menus for 2 + offer a great mix of dishes as well. Overall a fantastic evening, make the effort to try New Yamanishi for lunch or dinner. A trip to Japan in Crows Nest!

It’s hidden in a corner of Falcon Street toward Crows Nest side. The food is more Japanese fusion style, very nice & tasty. Ensure you arrive earlier to have a meal here. The restaurant is quite small. It’s a comfortable environment, full of Japanese authentic themes. Park behind the restaurant’s small side street.

From the moment you enter, the Japanese music, authentic atmosphere, Japanese staff, and Japanese chef make you feel as though you have truly returned to Japan. The attention to detail and genuine hospitality create a warm and comforting experience. In Sydney, where dining costs continue to rise, it is genuinely pleasing to enjoy such high-quality food and drinks at a reasonable price. This restaurant is perfect for spending time with friends or enjoying a relaxed evening with a partner, chatting freely while sharing classic izakaya-style dishes and sake. It is a rare and valuable restaurant in the North Sydney area. In the evening, parking is also relatively easy, which adds to the overall convenience and enjoyment of the visit. Highly recommended. I will be back
